Pyropteron chrysidiforme (Esper, 1782)

Fiery Clearwing

Wingspan: 17-23mm

A bivoltine diurnal species flying from May to July up to mid-afternoon and again in August. It has once been recorded from a light trap at Las Descargues and is curiously a frequent visitor to the swimming pool where it is commonly removed from the surface before being sucked into the skimmer. A species of the warm, rock strewn, herb-rich meadows here on the Fournanty Plateau.

The larva feeds on various species of dock Rumex overwintering one but often twice in tunnels bored into the tap root of the foodplant.
