Wingspan: 32-42mm

A bivoltine, highly variable species flying from March to November. A regular visitor to light and sugar it has been recorded from various habitats and has been taken at all sites. A species of open woodland, unmanaged grassland, gardens, verges etc.

Larvae are polyphagous on the roots and lower shoots of herbaceous plants. Overwinters as a larva with pupation taking place underground.
