Macrothylacia rubi (Linnaeus, 1758)

Fox Moth

Wingspan: male 55-65mm female 55-75mm

A univoltine species flying from May to July when the female is a frequent visitor to light whilst the male is diurnal. It has been recorded at all sites both upland and from the Causse. A species of heathland, moorland, wet meadows and woodland.

Larvae feed on various woody perennials, heathers, creeping willow, billberry, bramble and meadowsweet. Overwinters as a larva before pupating near the ground.
